We are delighted that Apprenticeships are coming back into fashion.  Ryan, 21, is studying for a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Site Carpentry and started working with us in February 2016.  The partnership has proved invaluable from both sides.

West Kent College, Tonbridge, Kent announced Ryan as their Apprentice of the Month in January 2017.

Ryan said: “I’m really proud to have received this award and would like to thank Rick and the team for nominating me. I’ve been privileged to work on some fantastic jobs with RWF, including a project for McLaren and two for English Heritage: one at Battle Abbey, where we constructed an 8m high softwood screen to divide a room – the other at the Tower of London, undertaking health & safety work on their stone arches. We’ve got a forthcoming project to work on Churchill’s War Rooms, which I’m really looking forward to.”

Ryan explains why he chose an apprenticeship: “I’d done woodwork at school as part of key stage 3 and really enjoyed it, so I always knew I wanted a career with a hands-on, creative element. I’d gone down the fairly traditional route of school sixth form, A levels, and got a place at Plymouth University to do Graphic Design. But then I had a change of heart and realised I preferred the hands-on creativity and paid practical on-the-job training that a carpentry apprenticeship would offer me.

“I did my Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery at West Kent College’s North Farm campus and really applied myself, getting 100% on four of my tests and 90% on the others. I found out about RWF Carpentry through my cousin and applied for an apprenticeship with them.”  When asked about his future aspirations, Ryan has clear goals: “I’m hoping to stay on with RWF and I hope to eventually progress to a site management role.”

From RWF's perspective “Ryan came to us a year ago, fresh into the world of work with a lot to learn about our unique client base. He has since progressed to become a valued member of the team by all of our tradesmen, which shows that he has really put the hard work in. All of us at RWF are very pleased with his progress.”
